The O.C. mobile phone game - what'll they think of next?
January 3rd 2007 01:26
From the “what’ll they think of next” files comes The OC mobile phone game.
When I first heard of this, I thought how ridiculous, but fuuuun. (Yes, I’m an Orange County fan!)
Which Beautiful Person OC-er could I pretend to be – if only for a moment?
I wondered if there was a chance of my reviving Marissa? None of the newbie characters – think Kaitlin and Taylor - have much clout as yet. Who knows what their personalities are meant to be, besides slightly annoying? Or, perhaps I could opt for Summer? Although now she’s no longer a Popular Girl, and more so hanging on to the hippie boho chic trend - soooo 2005 - she could be tad boring to play.
Further research on my part, however, revealed that the game is based only on the four main characters of old – Seth, Ryan, Summer and Marissa. (Seems we get things a little late here in Australia – the game was in the U.S. mid-last year.)
Still, it’s probably a good thing it’s the old crew, as I don’t think the game would work as well without ‘em (read: Marissa).
The game has been described as an updated version of the Sims-style game, New York Nights, of which I was admittedly an addict. So, I should be hooked shortly.
Apparently, the graphics, characterisations et al are even better though in this game.
The game is said to be based on mini games and multiple plotlines. Ahhh – plotlines! What could I come up with in my wildest fantasies for The OC crew?
The foursome having a double wedding? Marissa losing her designer wardrobe and having to shop at Goodwill and move to Ryan’s home town? Summer popping a baby out of that tiny, taut, brown stomach? Er, Marissa having a lesbian lover perhaps? (Oops, that crazy plotline has already been done, all right already!)
Further, how could I come up with suitably witty one-liners as a “virtual” cast member – requiring accelerated brain capacity to keep up with – to camouflage in with the crew?
The game is set in The OC’s usual haunts - the Cohen's kitchen, the pool house, the bait shop and the student lounge. Nice. Almost like my second home…
And, the goal of the game? To raise your attributes and increase friendship levels. How PC (and not the computer kind).
If only friends in real life were as “tight” as this American soapie’s crew.
We could all learn something from this game it seems. Modesty, humanity, generosity… Not that a bitchfest wouldn’t rate better (as the earlier episodes of the series showed)!!! Didn’t take long for the “new 90210” to go from catty to a sappy lovefest overnight. Ring, ring, indeed. See if you can add some spice to the game!
