Songs that remind me of ex-boyfriends - from P Diddy to Craig David to salsa

Certain songs not only remind me of different times in life – but different ex-boyfriends.
Not sure if that happens to everybody, but it sure can take me back to a place and a time.
Craig David and Dru Hill remind me of one Latino lover, who I dated for about four years. I introduced him to the goateed David (where did the big ‘CD’ go to, by the way, after his smooth tunes from Born To Do It were played in nearly every boutique around the globe?), but the Latino boyf introduced me to the soulful Dru Hill. (Does Enter the Dru ring a bell to anyone???) The bloke in question particularly favoured playing that album in the, er, bedroom.
The Latin One also favoured other R&B acts, like Blackstreet, and rappers, such as Ludacris. Then, there were all the salsa nights he dragged me to – which my feet couldn’t keep up with, but my pounding heart could! Nice memories. I now only regard the Latin One as a fond memory, so the songs make me smile – not cringe!! Rather, they take me back to when I was in my early 20s, rather than late 20s!
I recently bought a second-hand copy of Dru Hill’s “Hits” album and I thank the Latin boyf for introducing me to the now defunct group – especially, their remixed version of the hit, “In My Bed”. Great, great song! Give it a whirl.
My first proper boyfriend (although we only went on a few dates, aside from meeting at a particular nightclub regularly) – the Greek God – had a hankering for Keith Sweat. (Yep, most of my love interests were R&B/hip hop lovers, like me – until lately, that is!)
I remember going on a date with him in what I vaguely remember to be a white Ford Falcon and the Greek God playing Keith Sweat’s album over and over in its cassette player. Yep, I bought that album not longer after too for the memory!! (OK, I had a sad crush on him.) I also remember him playing P Diddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You” (or, as he was known then, ‘Puff Daddy’). I look back on the Greek God fondly (like a brother, not a lover anymore), as well.
One Italian boyf – who I took ages getting over admittedly – reminds me of two songs, Notorious B.I.G.’s Hypnotize and Stardust’s Music Sounds Better With You (he used to always magically appear at our favoured nightclub when the latter song came on)! He – like the songs – still haunt me a tad. Enough said on that one!
As for my current boyfriend, Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy, is It and that would be about the sum of it as our musical tastes, for once, clash. While I remain a devout R&B-er, he comes more from the alternative rock/heavy metal side of things. Was a little strange at first for me to get used to a guy with other musical persuasions, but maybe he can broaden my mind a little!? Ahh, we’ll see…
