Desperate Housewives - a computer game?
November 29th 2006 01:27
Women really are getting wired for sound.
The other day, while lazing in front of the television at night, I caught an ad for Desperate Housewives: The Game for PC – just in time for Christmas in Oz, of course.
I was intrigued.
Any visits to a gaming store with my boyfriend – me, usually being dragged along, stopping only to look at the pretty covers (read: Sims and Barbie) – are fairly uneventful. I am never enthusiastic enough to actually buy anything – so I wonder; will this piggy-backing on a hit-rating show really work for the gaming industry? Now, that they’ve captured the over-30s male market, will their planned assault on women market-wise work?
It certainly has promise, with the girls from Wisteria Lane attached.
But, the thing that left me pondering is whether the type of woman who finds appeal in a show like Desperate Housewives – if they’re anything like me and my friends – would be the type of woman who would want to play a computer game? For me and my friends, it’s a resounding “nup”. OK, we might be interested for a minute, just to have a try – then we’d be handing the game right on back. (At least, the game is a PC version though, so we don’t have to buy a console thingamajig.)
Still, according to the WomenGamers.com website, a healthy percentage of video gamers ARE female - 43 per cent of PC gamers and 35 per cent of console gamers. (Not, that this means they’re Desperate Housewives fans...)
So…. what does this lifestyle simulation PC game actually entail? Well, as a player, you can take on the role of a new housewife who moves to Wisteria Lane. As a resident, you can live all the gossip, drama and intrigue of a true Desperate Housewife – from decorating your own pad to picking out a wardrobe, taking part in poker sessions with your infamous neighbours, or being as polite or nasty to people as you want. The goal of the game? To unlock juicy, dark secrets in an episode-by-episode format (just like the show).
All, I want to know is… when is the Sex and the City PC game coming out? And, will the goal be how many shoes and outfits you can acquire during the game’s length?
