What would it be like to be Erica Baxter or Princess Mary?
How come some women get struck with the Lucky Stick, while others of us are stuck to a life of being mere mortals?
I’m planning a wedding in a week, but try, 50 guests and a long Sunday lunch for dining (my choice, of course, to make it low-key and not the full Italian affair, but STILL…) It’s hardly the French Riveria, I’ll admit. And, I’m not exactly wearing a million-dollar designer gown. Try off-the-rack for around $1200. Stylish – ahem, without the pricetag.
Still, I could see myself swanning about Monaco in another life; my hubby also owning a cruiser or inhabiting a castle. I can see my-fantasy-self at a top-notch New Year’s Eve party, where the guests mill about in only black and white costumes (as per the strict but uber chic dress code) and a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge – or any famed bridge, for that matter – seen from the penthouse apartment’s windows, with fireworks, of course, ablaze on the coat hanger of a bridge.

But, am I - like many others - kidding myself into thinking that One Day (soon, hopefully) all of my childhood fantasies will come to fruition? Even, if only for a fleeting moment. Days, maybe mere months, of purely Living It Up.
Or, will I grow instead to be content surviving on just the crumbs of the Good Life - reading about all the goings-on of the rich and famous in the glossies and tabloids (hello Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie and, of course, Paris)? Being super-rich and glam surely can’t always be rosy if all the meaner pics of the celebs are anything to go by – the zitty/hung-over/cellulite/lov escorned/about-to-be-imprison ed type pics. Still, I’m sure we’d all happily pose for the paparazzi for just a day, let them roll out the red carpet a few times, pop the cork of a $1000 bottle of champagne just for the heck of it, party at the Playboy mansion – even make the worst dressed list, for a mere slice of the good life.

I wonder, I wonder… if I will ever get to taste that yummy pie? Or if I will look back with rose-tinted glasses at my less glam but more wholesome life, with a loving partner and future family supporting me and a satisfying enough career? I wonder…

Obsessed with altering my clothes

May 28th 2007 05:14
Am I alone in clothing alterationist “hopping”?
I am too embarrassed to go to the same alternationist more than one time in a week, so I go to about three different ones on a regular basis. Just to spread it around. To make sure they don’t think I’ve got an obsession with altering my clothes or anything. So, I can wear my clothes, free of tugging at them all day, and enjoy a tailor-made look as opposed to a too-long-skirt/too-baggy-top kind of look. Hello, I’m a perfectionist.
Then, there’s the shoe repair shops for the re-heeling of my boots and more. I frequent about four different ones of those too.
Yup and I’m silly enough to think I’m saving by getting my old clothes revamped and my old shoes re-heeled. At more than $20 a pop more often than not, who I am kidding?
Still, if I bought something new, I would just alter it anyway, so it really is a saving. Really. Please believe me.
You see, once you start on the alteration spiral, it’s an addiction you can’t stop.
The worst is when you alter something to fit, then try to sell it on eBay and think getting $5 back for something you spent $70 on and $30 altering, is a bargain. It’s a very confusing sort of mindset to get in.
Anyways, I won’t tell you about all the different snack bars and cafes I frequent in my lunch breaks from work… don’t want you to think I’m some sort of freak, obsessed with the same tuna mornay or tuna salad on a daily basis. And, I don’t want the staff to think that either… Wonder if there is a name for this ‘disloyalty shopping’ disorder? Who knows.

Big Brother is ruining my relationship.
And, er, I’m not sure that I care. I’m addicted to the trashy Aussie reality TV series. My boyfriend isn’t addicted. Really isn’t. At all.
Last night, I went over his place and proceeded to sit through 1.5 hours of Big Brother (which was only meant to be one hour, but it went over time as usual – yes, I’m the Queen of the Remote in this household!) My boyf (let’s call him Mr Pushover) spent the night fixing his computer, checking eBay and, er, not talking to me and generally doing anything to avoid watching the series (up-close shots of Emma, not included). Then, he was all shitty when he dropped me home that I wasn’t paying enough attention to him and was addicted to BB.
Why can’t guys get into trash?????
Obviously, some do, otherwise there wouldn’t be any lads in the Big Brother house. Though they probably wouldn’t watch it if they themselves weren’t on it… But still…
Sometimes I think I enjoy the time I spend doing trashy stuff – reading chick lit novels in bed, watching romantic comedies in my PJs and gossiping about Big Brother – than I like, well, actually hanging out with my boyfriend. Is that sad?
Is it sad that I’m beginning to enjoy a girls’ night in with the box to time spent with my fella?
Maybe it’s that 2.5-year relationship hump. Or maybe it’s just the power of Big Brother.
Sometimes I’m so hooked I don’t want a show to end or I start imagining how cool it would be if I was in the BB pad with the housemates – then, I think about buying a packet of Starburst so I can score a gold key and ticket to getting on the series. Then, I stop and think, ‘Do I really want Australia to be watching me pluck my eyebrows and squeeze my pimples, when I can watch the goldfish bowl from the safety and comfort of my own lounge and stab people in the back without any viewers watching me?’
Let’s hope someone’s watching this space…

When are us gals gonna get over Sex and the City? I know I haven’t.
But, c’mon, how long’s it been really???
How much longer can we keep blaming our lack of activity in terms of marriage/babies/budgeting/fid elity on SATC? Telling ourselves “this is how Carrie thinks”… “this is what was acceptable for the SATC gals”… “our Mums’ generation may have acted differently, but this is the noughties and sooo Sex/City

The whole palaver about Sex and the City making a comeback in movie form has got me thinking about my favourite episodes.
In fact, it has got me pulling out my old faves from my DVD collection and dusting ‘em off.
I had forgotten the lasses of SATC for awhile there, but now they are back in my life again (and they will always be at the back of my mind, at least in mindset

Is the grass always greener – or is it just me?
No matter which aspect of life we are talking about – work, relationships or friends – it always seems like the grass is definitely a richer hue on the other side.
I have my good days, when I am feeling on top of the world and am loving my family/friends/work situation… Then little pangs of jealousy appear - when I catch up with someone I haven’t seen for awhile or read a glossy magazine article about a person with a truly fab life. Then, I begin to wonder if maybe I haven’t tried enough? Maybe I’ve been too comfortable? Predictable? Haven’t taken enough risks? Haven’t put myself out there? Listened too much to my parents/sister?...

The O.C. - axed!

February 2nd 2007 01:26
What are we going to do without The O.C.? OK, so we saw it coming. Marissa left. Summer went weird – hello hippie! And, Ryan got over his grief for Marissa a little too quickly – and a little too quickly fell into the arms of Taylor (quel annoying!).
But what now? Will it be like the end of Sex and the City – where we are still hanging on, still reading references to the characters in magazine and newspaper articles and watching the series on DVD over and over?? (Desperate Housewives really hasn’t been a catchy enough replacement for SATC - I don’t care what they say!!)
Will there be talk of an O.C. movie, but Mischa being the only one not to sign up due to not enough dosh being on offer, and the whole thing falling apart before it’s even started?

Certain songs not only remind me of different times in life – but different ex-boyfriends.
Not sure if that happens to everybody, but it sure can take me back to a place and a time.
Craig David and Dru Hill remind me of one Latino lover, who I dated for about four years. I introduced him to the goateed David (where did the big ‘CD’ go to, by the way, after his smooth tunes from Born To Do It were played in nearly every boutique around the globe?), but the Latino boyf introduced me to the soulful Dru Hill. (Does Enter the Dru ring a bell to anyone???) The bloke in question particularly favoured playing that album in the, er, bedroom

From the “what’ll they think of next” files comes The OC mobile phone game.
When I first heard of this, I thought how ridiculous, but fuuuun. (Yes, I’m an Orange County fan!)
Which Beautiful Person OC-er could I pretend to be – if only for a moment

New Year's Eve with Paris Hilton et al

December 27th 2006 00:15
Yup, it’s that time of year again. The countdown is on until New Year’s Eve. Why does what should really be the biggest party of the year fill me with such dread?
Yep, you guessed it. Because it’s always a let-down.
I always feel as though there is somewhere and some people more hip and fun (aside from my boyfriend and family, of course) that I could be spending the first few moments of the new year with – in my Dream Life, of course
